Wedding Cost by Region: What the Same Wedding Costs Across the US

By Olivia HartMarch 24, 20268 min read

Geographic variation in wedding cost is the single most under-discussed planning factor. National averages assume you live somewhere national. Almost no one does.

Below is the rough multiplier we use when consulting on weddings in different markets, normalized against the $300/guest national baseline.

Luxury markets (1.3–1.6× national). New York City metro, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Aspen, Napa, Hamptons, Martha's Vineyard. Catering minimums alone start at $200/plate; venue site fees can hit $25K before you've added a single chair.

Above-average markets (1.1–1.3×). Seattle, Boston, DC metro, Miami, Chicago, Denver. Strong vendor ecosystems, premium pricing, but you have actual choices in every category.

Average markets (0.9–1.1×). Most state capitals, mid-size metros — Austin, Nashville, Portland, Charlotte, Minneapolis, Philadelphia. The national $300/guest baseline applies pretty cleanly.

Below-average markets (0.7–0.9×). Smaller Midwest and Southern cities — Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, Des Moines, Tulsa. Vendors are talented; you just pay 20–30% less for the same quality.

Rural markets (0.5–0.7×). Genuinely small towns and rural counties. Limited vendor selection, but extraordinary value if you're willing to bring some vendors in from a nearby city.

The destination question. Couples regularly assume a destination wedding is more expensive. Often it isn't. A 60-guest destination wedding in Mexico can cost less than a 60-guest wedding in California, because (a) fewer guests RSVP yes when travel is required, and (b) destination venues bundle services that you'd contract separately at home.

What to do with this. If your home market is luxury-tier, three options actually move the number: (1) move the wedding 60–90 minutes outside the metro to a tier-down market, (2) cut guest count harder than feels comfortable, (3) consider a destination wedding where your money buys a full-service experience.

Use our location-specific calculators to see what the same wedding costs in your state, then compare to neighboring markets. The decision usually makes itself.
